About 'sherlock british tv'|Sherlock Holmes (British TV Show)
Best TV Shows on DVD 2009 Best TV Show #1: The Office This simple but entertaining storyline featuring Steve Carell as the branch manager of a dull paper company has become the most popular sitcom and certainly one of the best television shows on the air. The humor is relevant and often outrageous. The characters are quirky but likable. The Office is like Seinfeld with more absurdity and awkwardness. Best TV Show #2: Lost This popular and addictive show follows a group of people with unknowingly intertwined lives who have survived a plane crash on a mystical island where unnatural things keep happening. Every episode of Lost ends in a cliffhanger, so you'll want to keep watching episode after episode on the DVD. Best TV Show #3: House, M.D. The main character, Dr. House, is essentially Sherlock Holmes in a hospital with an attitude. His sidekick's name, Wilson, was even meant to sound like Watson. House and his team of residents spend every episode solving a different bizarre medical mystery. If the unusual twists in every case don't keep you glued to the TV, then House's unrestrained sarcasm and biting humor might. Best TV Show #4: 30 Rock Tina Fey must have a giant shelf of Emmys in her office from this show. 30 Rock is a critically acclaimed comedy full of her own witty, self-deprecating humor and loosely based on her own experiences as the head writer for Saturday Night Live. Alec Baldwin, who plays her studio executive boss, is silly and laugh-out-loud funny in what has become his best TV role ever. Best TV Show #5: 24 Good news. Kiefer Sutherland is finally out of jail and back to making episodes of the cult series 24. Every season represents a single day in special agent Jack Bauer's life, and every episode represents one action-packed hour in which he tries to resolve a national crisis. It's sort of like the Bourne Identity in a television show, and you will be sucked in episode after episode until you've finished an entire season of 24. Best TV Show #6: Heroes Heroes has jumped the shark a bit, but the first two seasons are excellent. Each character has a special power (similar to X-Men), and they discover that a secret government agency is committed to containing and performing tests on them. It's a comic book universe within a television show, so fans of comics and superhero storylines love Heroes. Best TV Show #7: Entourage In a nutshell, Entourage is the guy's version of Sex and the City. Every guy wants to be like Vince. Loosely based on Mark Wahlberg's life, it revolves around an actor who hits it big and brings his buddies from New York to become his groupies and share his lavish new celebrity lifestyle. Best TV Show #8: Grey's Anatomy Grey's Anatomy is a medical drama like ER, except they pay even less attention to the patients. Most of America seems to be okay with that, however, since it leaves more room for messy relationship drama and often raunchy subplots among the very attractive ensemble cast, which includes Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane. I won't deny that this hugely popular show is very entertaining. Best TV Show #9: South Park If you aren't already familiar with South Park, it's essentially an R-rated version of The Simpsons. The topics are often the same (current events, celebrities, politics, religion) but with even sharper and more shocking humor. The satire can be pretty dead-on, and when it's dead on, it is absolutely hilarious. Best TV Show #10: Family Guy What do you get when you create a Simpsons-like show about a baby with adult humor and a British accent? A very sharp and funny comedy called Family Guy. In fact, the dialogue is sometimes so jam-packed with references that you actually miss some of the jokes because there are just so many thrown out in a short period of time. Best TV Show #11: ER During the early years, ER was by far the best drama on television. Despite the regular fan base, the huge turnover in cast members caused the show to start slipping a few years ago. The original ER cast featuring Anthony Edwards and George Clooney left a while back, and the influx of recognizable actors like John Stamos and Shane West cannot keep the magic alive. I highly recommend every season up to the departure of Anthony Edwards on DVD. Best TV Show #12: John Adams (HBO Miniseries) Don't be so surprised that a historical miniseries on our second president could be on this list. The seven-part miniseries on HBO, featuring Paul Giamatti as John Adams, has become a wildly popular, award-winning hit among history fans and general audiences alike. Best TV Show #13: Arrested Development Known as the best television show that no one watched, this short-lived sitcom built up a base of extremely enthusiastic and dedicated fans who appreciated the show's amazing writing and quirky but witty sense of humor. However, the well-developed storylines, the critical acclaim, the multiple Emmys, and a spot on Time Magazine's list of 100 Greatest Shows of All Time somehow were not enough to get people to watch Arrested Development. Best TV Show #14: Saturday Night Live If you are an Saturday Night Live fan, the classic skits from the early seasons featuring Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Lily Tomlin, Steve Martin, Dan Aykroyd, and others are all on DVD. Best TV Show #15: Scrubs Scrubs is the only good medical sitcom on television, and probably comes closest to an accurate depiction of resident life (compared to ER, Grey's, House, etc). Fans of the show appreciate the awkward, often clumsy, but always likable characters, as well as the abrasive and hilarious rants of the outspoken Dr. Cox. Best TV Show #16: Friday Night Lights This generally underrated but critically acclaimed series follows the ups and downs in the lives of the coach, players, and cheerleaders of a Texas high school football team. Though Friday Night Lights is centered on the football team, it takes us into the complex lives of the main characters and deals with many issues relevant to small town America. Best TV Show #17: How I Met Your Mother Often compared to Friends, How I Met Your Mother follows a group of five friends in their twenties living and working in New York City. Some of the characters live together, and they all hang out in the same booth at the same bar where they share their funny experiences. Neil Patrick Harris, who plays the outrageous Barney, wasn't meant to be the star of the show, but that's what he's turned out to be. The show is actually supposed to be a story told by Ted, the main character, to his kids about how he met their mother. At this point, however, I am pretty convinced that unless ratings decline, the writers will keep up the Friends-like storylines and we will never find out who the mother is. Best TV Show #18: The Big Bang Theory Who knew that a show about geeks would be so popular? I have to say I like The Big Bang Theory. You'll recognize several of the cast members and guest stars from Roseanne, except they are PhDs this time around. The comedy is based on the lives of four socially awkward geeks and the attractive blonde who lives across the hall. Best TV Show #19: Sex and the City Though Sex and the City as a TV series is over, the movies seem to keep coming, so the characters are still alive. For anyone who doesn't know, this comedy/drama follows the lives of four attractive professional women who support each other through the ups, downs, and comedy of their social and dating lives in New York. Best TV Show #20: Pride and Prejudice (A&E, 1996) Here's another TV miniseries I had to mention. If you are a fan of chick flicks or Jane Austen, and you have never seen the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice, this is a must-see! |
